Towards the conclusion of the episode, we are given an account of the imagined future of Ireland, filtered through the collective subconscious of the pub patrons, and cast in apocalyptic Biblical terms. After the climactic scene in which The Citizen hurls a biscuit box at Bloom's head (mimicking the scene in The Odyssey when the newly-blinded Cyclops throws a boulder into the sea at Odysseus's ship), there is an interpolation, written in the style of a contemporary newspaper story, of a great momentous earthquake, of which "there is no record extant of a similar seismic disturbance in our island since the earthquake of 1534, the year of the rebellion of Silken Thomas" (//U// 12.1860-1862)
